Everything you need to decide how to spend December 31, 2026 in New York: what each option really involves, what's confirmed so far, and when to book.

New Year's Eve 2027 falls on Thursday, December 31, 2026. At midnight New York welcomes 2027, and the Ball above Times Square starts its 60-second descent at exactly 11:59 PM Eastern Time. This guide explains your realistic options, from the free public celebration to hotel parties with a view. For each one we separate what is officially confirmed for 2027 from what is still based on last year's plan.
First decision: street, water, rooftop or table?
Almost every NYE plan in New York is a variation on four settings. Each involves a very different evening, so choose the setting before you compare venues.

Times Square Ball Drop: free, iconic and demanding
The Times Square celebration is free and needs no ticket. The official public viewing areas fill on a first-come, first-served basis. The organizers' published schedules show the celebration starting shortly before 6:00 PM, with the Ball dropping at 11:59 PM. Anyone selling “tickets” to the public viewing areas is not selling an official product.
The hard part is the waiting. Last year's official guidance said there are no portable restrooms in Times Square. It also said there are no licensed food vendors in the viewing areas, and that if you leave your area you should not expect to get back to your spot. NYE cruises: the comfortable way to see the skyline
A cruise swaps the street-level crush for a heated cabin, a deck and the skyline. Circle Line has published New Year's Eve 2027 sailings from Pier 83 in Midtown. The dinner cruise departs at 10:00 PM and returns at about 1:00 AM, with a dinner buffet, standard open bar, live DJ and a midnight champagne toast, and it's open to all ages. The operator's separate party cruise follows the same timing but is 21+ and serves appetizers instead of dinner.
Remember that you cannot see the Ball Drop from the river. A cruise is about the skyline and the harbor, not Times Square. Fireworks are not a listed inclusion on these sailings, so treat any you do see as a bonus rather than part of the booking.
Parties and rooftops: when the view is part of the ticket
Times Square's hotels run ticketed parties, and a small number of them include access to see the Ball Drop in person. Two confirmed 2027 examples stand out. The Times Square EDITION offers two packages, the 701West tasting-menu dinner and the Garden Party. Both include VIP access to live, unobstructed Ball Drop viewing with a security escort from the hotel, plus a 12–2 AM after-party. The Knickerbocker's “Saints & Sinners” party on its St. Cloud rooftop sells four tiers with outdoor Ball Drop viewing access, rain or shine.
Don't assume every rooftop or hotel bar near Times Square has a view of the Ball. Most don't, and many parties show the countdown on screens. Read each event's inclusions carefully.
NYE dinner: a long table and a toast at midnight
A dinner reservation keeps you warm and seated through midnight. Near Times Square, Gatsby's Landing is promoting an NYE 2027 dinner party from 7:45 PM to 1:00 AM, with a five-course tasting menu, an open bar and a champagne toast. Hotels: where you sleep shapes your whole night
If watching the Ball from your room is the dream, look for an explicitly named view-room product. The New York Marriott Marquis sells a specific Ball Drop View Room offer with its own booking code and a multi-night minimum stay, and December 31 is not an eligible check-in date. The same hotel runs several NYE parties, including an all-ages celebration. For everyone else, staying just outside the Midtown closure area can make the night much easier. Free and low-cost alternatives
- Times Square public viewing. Free, first-come, first-served.
- The official live webcast. The latest edition streamed free from 6:00 PM to 12:15 AM, with a captioned and ASL-interpreted version.
- Central Park. NYRR's four-mile Midnight Run is confirmed for Dec 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM, and NYRR says fireworks at midnight signal the start. Running requires registration.
- Brooklyn. Prospect Park's free Grand Army Plaza fireworks are a long tradition, most recently held for the arrival of 2026. The 2027 program is awaiting confirmation.

Getting around on Dec 31
The subway runs 24 hours and is usually the most reliable way to move around on New Year's Eve. Around Times Square, though, streets close progressively through the day. On Dec 31, 2025, closures started as early as 2:00 AM on some blocks, with wider Midtown traffic closures from the afternoon. Station entrances and exits near the celebration can also be restricted. Check the MTA on the day, and expect taxis and rideshares to be scarce and expensive around midnight.
- Plan to arrive at any Midtown venue much earlier than a normal evening would need.
- Know which avenue your venue asks you to approach from. Crossing Times Square on foot may not be possible.
- After midnight, walk a few blocks away from the crowds before trying to get a car.
Weather and what to wear
We don't publish forecasts months ahead. Nobody can reliably predict Dec 31 weather in September. Historically, late-December nights in New York are cold, often near or below freezing. Wind between tall buildings and along the rivers makes it feel colder still. Booking timeline
- Now (autumn): choose your format and book limited-capacity experiences such as rooftops, hotel view rooms and premium parties. Several 2027 packages were already on sale when we last checked.
- October–November: book dinners and cruises, reserve accommodation, and read venue terms. Some purchases are final and non-refundable.
- Early December: look for official 2027 Times Square operations: entry points, closures and restricted items. We'll update our guides as soon as they're published.
- Final week: check the forecast, confirm arrival instructions with your venue, and plan your route home after midnight.
