What a New Year's Eve cruise is really like

A New Year's Eve cruise is a ticketed sailing that is under way when the clock strikes midnight. Most combine a heated indoor cabin with open deck space, and include food, a bar and music. Instead of standing in a street-level crowd, you count down with the skyline around you, then return to the pier after midnight.

There are two broad formats. Dinner cruises focus on a meal and a seated table, and are often open to all ages. Party cruises focus on drinks, a DJ and dancing, and are usually 21+. Both run on a fixed schedule: once you sail, you stay aboard until the boat docks.

    Circle Line's party sailing for 2027 departs Pier 83 at 10:00 PM and returns at about 1:00 AM. It includes an open bar (spirits, beer, wine and soft drinks), stationary and passed appetizers, a live DJ and a midnight champagne toast. 21+ only, valid ID required.

Prefer a free night?

The Times Square public celebration costs nothing, though it means a long wait outdoors. Brooklyn's Prospect Park fireworks have also been free in past years.
