Times Square Ball Drop 2027: Complete Guide

• When: Thursday, December 31, 2026. The Ball starts its 60-second descent at exactly 11:59 PM ET.
• Where: the Ball is lowered from atop One Times Square, in Midtown Manhattan.
• Cost: public viewing is free and first-come, first-served. No tickets are needed.
• Program: in recent years the official celebration has begun shortly before 6:00 PM.
• Conditions: no portable restrooms, no licensed food vendors, no re-entry to your spot, and strict security screening.
• Midnight: the countdown, the Ball reaching the bottom, and confetti over the crowd. NYC Tourism notes that visitors can submit wishes to be printed on the confetti.

Yes. The outdoor celebration in Times Square is a free event open to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis. You don't pay to enter the public viewing areas. The costs are indirect. You give up a whole afternoon and evening, may need to buy a meal beforehand, and will probably spend more on getting home than on a normal night.

Paid options around Times Square, such as hotel parties, rooftops and restaurants, are private events. They are not part of the public celebration.

No ticket is needed for the public viewing areas. Be cautious of anyone selling “tickets” or “reserved spots” for the public celebration. Some private venues sell packages that include Ball Drop viewing. Those are real, paid experiences run by the venue, such as the Times Square EDITION's escorted viewing or The Knickerbocker's rooftop.

The Ball is lowered from the top of One Times Square, the narrow tower at the south end of Times Square. The public viewing areas stretch north along the avenues. The farther north you stand, the smaller the Ball appears, and the more you'll rely on the giant screens.

There's no single “best spot” anyone can promise. Access is managed by the NYPD and changes with crowd levels. In general:

• Closer to the Ball means a better view, but you'll need to arrive earlier and wait longer.
• Farther north means you can arrive later, but the Ball is small, partly blocked, or seen mainly on screens.
• A clear sightline matters more than how close you are. Buildings and screens block the view from some positions.

For Dec 31, 2025, the official viewing entry points opened at 3:00 PM. The areas nearest the Ball fill first, and police close sections as they reach capacity. A realistic day, based on last year's pattern, looks like this:

1. Late morning: eat a proper meal, dress in all your layers, and use a restroom right before you head out.
2. From 3:00 PM (last year): entry points open and screening begins. Earliest arrivals get closest.
3. Around 6:00 PM: the official program begins, with entertainment through the evening.
4. 11:59 PM: the Ball begins its 60-second descent. Midnight brings the countdown and confetti.
5. After midnight: the crowd disperses gradually, and streets reopen after clean-up.

Spectators are held in secured, fenced viewing areas, often called “pens,” along the avenues. You enter through a police checkpoint and are directed to the next available area. Once an area is full, it closes and new arrivals are sent farther away. You'll stand for hours in a dense crowd, with little room to move.

For the last celebration (Dec 31, 2025), the City of New York listed viewer entry points at:

• West 45th Street at 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue
• West 49th Street at 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue
• West 52nd Street at 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue
• West 56th Street at 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue

The Times Square Alliance's guidance for that year also said entry was only from 6th or 8th Avenue, and that no one would be allowed to cross Broadway/7th Avenue. Do not treat these as confirmed for 2027. They are the most recent official pattern, and the NYPD can change them.

Everyone entering the viewing areas passes through security, and all bags are searched. Expect lines and delays at checkpoints, especially mid-afternoon. Carrying almost nothing is the fastest way through.

The most recent official guidance prohibited:

Public drinking is illegal in New York City, and police confiscate alcohol. What usually works: small items in your pockets, a compact power bank, hand warmers, and a small snack. Check the official 2027 list before you go.

There are no portable restrooms in Times Square during the celebration. This is the single most important fact for planning your day, because leaving your viewing area to find a restroom means you shouldn't expect to get back in.

• Use a restroom right before you enter a viewing area.
• Moderate your drinking in the hours before.
• If a long wait without facilities isn't realistic for someone in your group, consider an alternative.

There are no licensed food and beverage vendors in Times Square during the celebration. Eat a substantial meal beforehand. Nearby restaurants are extremely busy on Dec 31, and leaving your spot to eat means losing it.

Official guidance is clear: if you leave your viewing area, for example to dine in a restaurant, you will not be able to return to your spot. Treat entering as a commitment until midnight.

The subway runs 24 hours and is the most practical way to get to Midtown. Service near the celebration can be adjusted on the night, and station exits close to Times Square may be restricted or very crowded. We don't list last year's station changes as 2027 facts. • Approach via a station a few blocks away from Times Square, then walk to your entry avenue.
• Driving is not practical. Parking garages in the area stopped operating from late morning last year.
• After midnight, walk several blocks away from the crowds before looking for a taxi or rideshare.

The City's notice for Dec 31, 2025 described closures building through the day, including:

• Traffic detours from 2:00 AM on West 42nd–49th Streets between 7th Avenue and Broadway.
• Detours from 4:00 AM on West 43rd–48th Streets between 6th and 8th Avenues.
• Wider detours from 11:00 AM across West 37th–57th Streets. Parking garages ceased operations and trucks were restricted.
• From 4:00 PM, 6th to 8th Avenue from 42nd to 57th Street closed to all but emergency vehicles, and 42nd Street was closed from 5th to 9th Avenue.

The City noted all information was subject to change at the NYPD's discretion. Expect a similar scale in 2027, but wait for the official notice.

We won't publish a forecast months in advance. Historically, late-December nights are cold, often near or below freezing, and standing still for hours makes it feel much colder. Umbrellas were on the latest prohibited list, so plan on a hooded waterproof coat.

• Thermal base layers, an insulated windproof coat, a hat, gloves and a scarf
• Insulated waterproof boots and wool socks
• Hand and toe warmers in your pockets

The organizers have offered a designated viewing area for guests with disabilities, with limited capacity. When we last checked, the official FAQ showed that area as having reached capacity for the previous celebration. That suggests early registration is essential. The official live webcast has also offered a stream with open captions and American Sign Language interpretation. A hotel with a designated view room, or an indoor party with a livestream, can be a more comfortable alternative.

There's no age limit for the public celebration, but it's a demanding day for children. Consider the long standing wait, the cold, the lack of restrooms and food, and very dense crowds. If you do bring kids:

• Write your phone number on a wristband or card in their pocket, and agree on a meeting point.
• Dress them even more warmly than yourself, and pack pocket snacks.
• Consider all-ages alternatives with a bathroom and a heated room, such as the Circle Line dinner cruise or the Marriott Marquis's all-ages Luxe & Lights.

Everyone leaves at once. Expect slow-moving crowds, closed streets during clean-up, and packed stations nearest Times Square. Walking several blocks before trying to board a subway or find a car usually saves time. If you have an early flight on January 1, allow plenty of margin, or stay somewhere within walking distance.
